----------Team New Hampshire's Letterboxing Tales----------

Team New Hampshire is a team of 5. First there is my beautiful partner in crime, Sarah. Next are her 2 sons, Billy and Elijah. Then there is our son, Levi. And finally there is me, David. We live in the most wondefullest state in the country, New Hampshire. The "Live Free or Die" state. We started letterboxing in August of 2005 and we love every minute of it.

A Shot at Extreme Boxing on Father's Day!

Earlier in the week, I wanted to go hike a mountain on Father's Day. Have a little me time. Then as the week went on, plans changed and I was thinking of taking the family to the highest peak in New England, Mt. Washington. Mt. Washington's elevation is 6288 feet. Oh, for those of you that don't know, there is an auto road to the top. I couldn't expect the family to hike a mountain that high! But anyway, as the week past, Sarah thought she had heard about the Cog Railway, which also heads to the top of Mt. Washington, had a Father's Day special. After some research, I found out it wasn't for the Cog and driving was still the thing to do.
Soon, Father's Day came and we headed to Mt Washington. The weather was so beautiful when we left the house, but became not so much when we arrived. At the base of the mountain we were warned of 10 foot visibility at the summit. I really didn't think that was a big deal until we got close to the top. I was scared for my life! But it took some time to make it to the top. Normally it would take someone 25 minutes to drive to the top, but not today! After we found a parking spot, which was really hard to find in the fog, we walked in a straight line to the main building. It was 50 degrees at the summit. A 20 degree difference from what we had at the base. Once in the main building, we warmed up a little. My Dad was taking the Cog up and we were going to meet at 2:00. He arrived and shortly afterwards, we went looking for the letterbox outside.
When we got outside, it was still a bit cold and the wind was blowing at 35 mph. This box we went looking for was a visual clue box. Only 1 problem. We couldn't use the distant portion of the clue to find the box. The visibility thing again. We tried to find the rocks in the picture. For about 30 minutes we were out in the rain and wind and cold looking for this box only not to find it. My Dad and I had no problem with that. It was really cool to have experienced that kind of weather. We were "Extreme Letterboxing!" We got back inside and warmed up a little before we headed back down the mountain. The drive down wasn't nearly as bad as it was going up.
So even though some people probably wouldn't drive the auto road under these conditions, I would do it again in a heart beat. Mt. Washington is know for having some of the worst weather on the planet, and it was nice to be able to experience a small bit of that.
