Spotlight-on-NH : Loudon
Located just outside of the state's capital, Loudon is the home of the New Hampshire International Speedway, where the likes of Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordan, Kasey Kahne, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. race twice a year for the Nextel Cup. Where Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. once did the same. But I'm not going to just bore you with all the mumbo jumbo about big fast cars that drive around in a circle down the road from where I live. Loudon is more than race cars. Ok, just to let you know, it is mostly race cars. But during my research, I did find out that Loudon happens to be statisticly, the highest at risk in the state for tornados. There were tornados in 1972 and most recently in 1999 which wandered its into neighboring Pittsfield. But destruction aside, there was plenty of contruction in Loudon too. Located in the center of town, is the historic Loudon Congregational Church, built in 1829. It has an interesting Italianate steeple, a dome atop a set of columns and arches, and the double doors, common to old New England churches and town halls. It is an example of one of the last of its kind on the inside: the sanctuary has side pews, two aisles, and one large set of joined center pews in the middle. This style, which had been more common in the 1700s, was, by the early to mid-1800s, giving way to the increasingly popular center aisle design.
Come one, come all. Loudon is even more beautiful in the fall.
